«School space design is a powerful element capable of triggering innovation in educational models that can no longer remain confined to the uniform floor plan layouts of Italian schools» (Giovanni Biondi).
This book has deep roots: the project began in 2012, when Indire was commissioned by the Ministry of Education to investigate space reorganization in the context of the transformations that school systems were undergoing worldwide. The research outcomes – presented here in English as the 2025 updated and expanded version of the 2016 original Dall’aula all’ambiente di apprendimento – follow a conceptual trajectory that links the past to the future. It envisions a new idea of school, where its students, through their differences and distinctive features, are acknowledged and welcomed as dynamic, active participants. This new edition of the work adds a reflection on the path schools must undertake to understand how innovative physical spaces can support modern, active teaching methods and foster an educational experience based on comfort and well-being.
